Wow what a fantastic weekend we all had.
It was so great to see everyone having a good time either on the water, in the water, in the clubhouse or on the dance floor. Over the weekend people were so keen to find out who was coming and then spending time with each other catching up on the last 50 years. The sailing was exciting with 30+ boats on the water both days. When the mist cleared it was a great sight for us spectators! For those of you out sailing it didn’t matter what the weather was doing as you were going to get wet anyway-some more than others when they ended up in the water instead of on top of it! Quite a few people travelled a long way to get here. We had guests from Ashburton, North Canterbury, Auckland, Perth and even America. Thank you for making the effort to help us celebrate.
The dinner and dance proved to be highlight for most of us with the delicious food, a great band and some wonderful speeches from Joy McGregor-Smith, our patroness; June Hay, guest speaker; Max Annand, commodore; Phil Folter, CYA and of course our MC, Peter Bain. Well done Peter. You kept us beautifully entertained and informed during the course of the evening. As for the dancing...well if you didn’t move while you were standing up you soon felt seasick so it was best to keep dancing! There were many stories going around that night of previous dances held at the hall and I daresay that won’t be the last one from our club to be held there. The hall looked wonderful with all the bunting and other nautical themed decorations dotted around. Well done to those who set it up.
On Monday there was a big turnout for the farewell, prizegiving and morning tea held in the marquee. Our vice president, Peter Withall made a wonderful speech on his involvement with sailing in Christchurch and in particular Pigeon Bay. Before he cut the 50th Anniversary cake Peter made a donation to our club. We thank you very much Peter for your endless support and generosity towards PBBC. You have made life a lot easier and happier for those who sail and for those who are landlubbers and end up in the kitchen!
Please check out our website for photos and book/dvd details of the weekend. I'm sure you will all agree the book and photos are going to be fantastic. Thank you to Thysje and Wayne plus their helpers in putting it altogether for us to enjoy.
The committee would like to thank you all for attending the 50th Anniversary and making it the success that it was. We hope that it doesn’t take another 50 years to have a great party again!
